Players &amp; Cards:

Tong-its is a game designed for three players only, using a standard Anglo-American deck of 52 cards (without jokers). The cards in each suit are ranked as follows: Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King. An Ace is worth one point, while Jacks, Queens, and Kings are worth ten points each. All other cards count their face value.

Objective:

The objective of the game is to form sets and runs by drawing and discarding cards and minimize the number of unmatched cards remaining in your hand.

A run consists of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, such as the 4, 5, and 6 of Hearts or the 8, 9, 10, and Jack of Spades. In this game, an A-K-Q sequence of a suit is not considered a run since aces are low.

A set consists of three or four cards of the same rank, for example, the 7 of Hearts, the 7 of Clubs, and the 7 of Diamonds. A card can only belong to one combination at a time - you cannot use the same card as part of both a set and a run.

The Deal:

The first dealer is randomly selected, and subsequently, the dealer is the winner of the previous hand. The cards are dealt one at a time counterclockwise, starting with the dealer. The dealer receives thirteen cards, while each of the other players receives twelve cards. The remainder of the deck is placed face down to form the stock.

The Play:

Each turn consists of the following:
<ol>
 <li>Draw: You must start by taking one card from either the top of the stock or the top card on the discard pile and adding it to your hand. You can only take a card from the discard pile if you are able to create a meld (a set or run) with it, and if you do so, you are required to expose the meld.</li>
 
 <li>Exposing Melds: If you have valid melds (sets or runs) in your hand, you can choose to expose them on the table in front of you. However, exposing melds is optional if you have taken a card from the stock - you are not obligated to expose a meld just because you can. Note that melds held in hand do not count against you at the end of the play. At least one meld must be laid on the table by a player for the hand to be considered opened. In a special case where you can meld a set of four and have not drawn from the discard pile to complete the meld, you can lay the set of four face down. By doing this, you can "open" your hand without losing the bonus payments for a secret set of four and without revealing the cards to the other players.</li>
 
 <li>Laying off (sapaw): This is also optional. If desired, you may add cards to sets or runs that have previously been melded by yourself or others. There is no limit to the number of cards a player may lay off in one turn. It is not necessary to open your hand to lay off cards. Laying a card off on another player's exposed meld prevents that player from calling Draw on their next turn.</li>
 
 <li>Discard: At the end of your turn, you must discard one card from your hand and place it face up on top of the discard pile.</li>
</ol>
